Nestled in the heart of Lancaster County, Gordonville is a quiet, picturesque village known for its rolling farmlands and strong sense of community. Home to just over 500 residents, this unincorporated hamlet in Leacock Township is little-known outside the area, but it embodies the idyllic charm of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Scenic country roads around Gordonville are often dotted with horse-drawn buggies, as the Old Order Amish constitute a significant presence
Gordonville’s story dates back to the early 19th century. The town grew up alongside one of America’s first railroads – the Philadelphia-Columbia Railroad, which laid tracks through the area in the 1830s.
In fact, the village is named after Daniel Gordon, who built the first dwelling here in 1832 as the railroad arrive. By the mid-1800s, Gordonville had a train station and was a bustling stop on the “Main Line” of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
A notable brush with history occurred in 1861 when President-elect Abraham Lincoln spoke from his train just a mile east of town to a crowd of 5,000 onlookers. Throughout the late 1800s, as many as 200 trains passed through Gordonville daily, putting this little village on the map.
As an unincorporated community, Gordonville has no mayor or borough council of its own. Instead, it falls under the governance of Leacock Township, which oversees local services and ordinances for the village. Leacock Township is managed by a five-member Board of Supervisors who handles everything from zoning to road maintenance. This township-led governance means that residents of Gordonville benefit from the wider resources of the township while maintaining their small-town identity.
Life in Gordonville is deeply influenced by Amish and Mennonite traditions. The town’s cultural fabric is woven with simple living, agriculture, and neighborly values. You’ll find Amish farms surrounding the village, their well-tended fields and windmills creating the iconic landscape Lancaster County is famous for. One of the hallmark events showcasing this culture is the Annual Gordonville Spring Auction & Mud Sale.
Even as a small village, Gordonville and its immediate surroundings offer a variety of interesting places to explore:
One interesting brush with fame: celebrated author Wendell Berry once mentioned Gordonville in a collection of essays, a testament to the inspiration drawn from the town’s pastoral landscape.
Neighboring Communities: Gordonville is surrounded by a tapestry of charming towns and villages, each with its character. A few worth noting include:
